　　《缺席》融合黑白和彩色、真人和动画以及其它一些元素。片中的女人、在精神病收容所里的女画家“EH”（艾玛•豪科），反复地用断裂的铅笔芯给自己的丈夫写着信，在她的窗外，一束持续变化着的光表现着她的精神情绪。配合着这在棱镜般的镜子之间反射的光的，是时有时无的宛如从脑海中传出的女人的悲凄的尖叫——全片几乎没有出现过女主角的正脸，以体现一种匿名性，同时通过其它手法来模拟出她脑中的镜像。
　　值得一提的是，为本片配乐《一对》（指女人和看不见的丈夫是一对）的作曲家施托克豪斯（Stockhausen Karlheinz）在配乐的过程中哭了，因为这部片子让他想起了自己在二战期间被纳粹抓走的母亲。

　　在本片中，奎氏兄弟二人俨然化身为破解16世纪欧洲绘画图像密码的研究人。该片如同一部科教片甚至教程，它将在剪下的纸片上绘制的人像和立体木偶结合起来，浑然一体地同时表现出平面和立体定格动画的特色。片中所讲解的是16世纪的一些欧洲绘画中是怎样将隐晦的图像通过透视变形转化为可以掩人耳目的另一重直观图像的：一幅画正面看上去是风景画，而从斜侧面看去则能看出另一个肖像。
　　片子在结束前举出了运用这种图像失真的绘画方法的最著名的例子——小汉斯•荷尔拜因在1533年所作的《大使肖像》。该画的中下方那个有名的“骷髅透视”同时也暗示了“荷尔拜因”这一名字的由来：“Holbein”即“Hollow bone”——“Hohl bein”之意。
