　　阿尔伯特·卡恩（Albert Kahn）是阿尔萨斯出生的法国犹太人，因投资南非黄金和宝石矿山成功，成为欧洲屈指可数的富豪，此后自己开设银行，参与发行国际公债，并热心从事慈善事业。在激烈动荡的年代，他目睹世界各地的民族文化、生活的急剧变化，萌生了设立地球史料馆，保留此时此刻世界面貌的构想。
　　从1908年开始，他倾注了膨大的资产和心血，在二十余年中，派遣大量摄影师去世界各地，采用当时最先进的彩色摄影技术，拍摄了七万两千余枚彩色照片、长达一百小时的黑白和彩色电影胶卷，记录了二十世纪初叶，五十多个国家的民众，在时代变迁的浪潮席卷下的日常劳动、娱乐、传统仪式以及各年代的代表性事件，成为名垂世界映像史的一大壮举。
　　但是卡恩在二十年代的世界经济恐慌中破产，使他的计划遭到毁灭性打击，失意中的他于1941年底，在德军占领下的巴黎黯然去世，唯一留在他身边的庞大的映像收藏...
