　　1987年，由王扶林导演，欧阳奋强、陈晓旭、邓婕等人主演的八七版红楼梦在内地和香港播映以来，反响热烈，不久新建的中央彩色电视中心竣工，为庆祝中心落成启用，同时为红楼梦宣传造势，中央台筹划举办一台红楼梦晚会和知识竞赛节目。
　　晚会由中央电视台、香港亚洲电视台和中国广播影视杂志联合主办，于1987年9月14日至19日录制，10月3日在大陆、香港两地实况播出。
　　有知情人透露，母带在央视当年的大火中不幸损毁，2019年，经过红迷们不懈努力，终于找到了当年有心人录制的节目，这一极其珍贵的影像资料才得以面世。
