一位房东太太租了一个单位给一位陌生人，但这位陌生人关在房中一星期都不出门，令房东太太受不了，因此向福尔摩斯求助。福尔摩斯认为陌生人在晚上无人时掉了包，换了另一人入住，颇有意思，而且有人袭击房东，决定插手调查。租客每天都会阅读报纸，因此福尔摩斯在报纸上寻找线索。他发现租客的同伴在对面单位，及向租客打灯做暗号。暗号突然中断，福尔摩斯惊觉有危险，于是冲上对面，并发现有人死了。福尔摩斯打暗号叫对面的租客过来，发现租客早已掉包为一女士，该女士决定告知事件的一切。 -
