一次意外中，少年弘濑琢磨（小清水亚美 配音）的双眼失去了光明，这为他内向的性格更增添了一层阴影。父亲将琢磨托付给乡下的叔叔代为抚养，同时也希望乡间闲散的生活能够治愈他受伤的心灵。在乡间，琢磨结识了个性活泼开朗的姐妹神乐萤（成濑未亚 配音）和神乐雏田（田中凉子 配音），这一对姐妹乐观的态度让琢磨的心扉敞开了不少，同时，班级中的田端唯（安田未央 配音）等同学也令琢磨暂时忘却了痛苦。
与此同时，那个叫做小日向早美（樱井浩美 配音）的女孩出现在了琢磨的视线中，由于家族的缘故，早美只能隐居在深山之中，接受居民们的憎恨和排斥来替家人赎罪。早美的坚强感动了琢磨，在两人的努力下，同学们也逐渐的接受了早美的存在。一切都看似往好的方向发展，直到村长说出了那个和早美有关的，足以摧毁琢磨灵魂的秘密。

影片根据泰·加涅发表的的文章《高处：雪地里的脚印引发了一场温情救援》(High Places: Footprints i n the Snow Lead to an Emotional Rescue，暂译)改编，讲述了母亲、护士兼登山爱好者帕姆·贝尔斯的故事，当她独自跋涉华盛顿山，被暴风雪困住时，她遇到了陌生的登山者并为其展开了一场大胆的营救。
