秀智和秀因姊妹两个在6.25战争中失去了父母和哥哥一起生活在外祖母家。由于人们总是称赞秀因漂亮，渐渐遭到秀智的嫉恨。于是在逃难的路上，秀智狠心将当时被唤作“五牧”的秀因抛弃。借着兄长的成功，秀智在一个相对优越的环境中长大，而连本名都不知道的“五牧”却走上另一条道路，成为一名工厂女工。五牧与工厂领导仁宰同居，却在怀孕后遭到了抛弃。仁宰转而准备和秀智结婚。
被抛弃的五牧和同是孤儿院出身的日焕结婚，但日焕对家庭丝毫没有责任感，更对五牧时常拳脚相加。后来经过越战的洗礼，日焕回到家中像完全变了一个人，努力和五牧一起经营一个和睦的家庭。但不幸接踵而来，日焕在煤矿坍塌事件中丧生，五牧也身受重伤。受到良心谴责的秀智终于站出来与自己的妹妹相认，但已经心力交瘁的五牧拒绝了这份悔意，含怨离开了人世。
